Adam Schiff announces he has tested positive for coronavirus

Something strange has happened in Washington, D.C, in the last few weeks. Even as numbers of COVID-19 cases are holding steady elsewhere, high-profile officials are increasingly announcing that they have the virus.

Rep. Adam Schiff (D-CA) announced Tuesday that he had tested positive for the coronavirus, The Hill reported. This so-called breakthrough infection happened despite his admission that he was “vaccinated and boosted.”

“This evening, I unfortunately tested positive for COVID-19,” he tweeted Tuesday evening. “I’m feeling fine, and grateful to be vaccinated and boosted,” he boasted about the measures meant to protect against the virus.

“In the coming days, I will quarantine and follow CDC [Centers for Disease Control and Prevention] guidelines,” the post continued. “And remember, please get vaccinated!”

Schiff’s announcement comes as several others have announced their breakthrough infections in recent weeks despite similar precautions. New Jersey Democratic Gov. Phil Murphy had announced he was “asymptomatic and feeling well” when he told the press about his positive test last week.

Hillary Clinton, twice-failed Democratic presidential candidate and former secretary of state, said her infection was marked by “mild cold symptoms.” She was joined by William Burns, CIA director, who also tested positive for the virus, a fact that was particularly worrying given that the diagnosis came just one day after he met with President Joe Biden.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki, who is also frequently in Biden’s orbit, had announced her second breakthrough infection on March 22, NPR reported. This was significant because it meant she was not able to accompany Biden on his European trip that week.

Since the omicron variant tore through the U.S. in January, infection rates have been on the downswing nationwide. However, these prominent politicians and officials have been coming up positive for the virus despite their fully vaccinated and boosted status.
